Being anorexic is unhealthy. Even more so. Do a web search on "anorexic". And to say that your niece’s views on the matter exist in isolation from the views of society (which say "YOU MUST NOT HAVE ANY FAT ON YOUR BODY!!") is being rather naive and stupid. Oh, and the US already has obesity problems. So does Australia. We’re the 2 fattest countries in the world. So on the one hand you have people obsessing over their diet, and on the other hand you have people lining up for "double bacon deluxe mega cholestrol burger monoliths". In some small way the two are connected. Please give me examples of where larger women appear on TV as "sex goddesses"/role models. People are driven by what they see on TV. TV is a warped reflection of the real world. So are magazines, etc. The photos of models in magazines are photos of real people, who may be one in a million, but they soon become commonly accepted examples of "beauty". So even though you might be able to say theoretically that "TV does not reflect the real world and we should not be driven by it" it’s very hard to remember that when you’re actually watching E! It depends what you class as overweight. Weight is not important, physical fitness is. I was reading an article about a fitness instructor who eats a healthy diet and is a size 22. She has been proven to be in much better shape than most women half her size. You’re forgetting that body shape is governed by something other than diet and exercise – genetics. Some people can be healthy at a much higher weight than others, and _unhealthy_ at a lower one. I think Mel C looks better than ever, and I think Posh Spice looked at her healthiest when she was pregnant. Of late, she looks gaunt. That is a good point. We should be encouraging people to eat healthily and to take regular exercise. I understand that everyone has personal preferences for what they find attractive. Unfortunately the media likes to shove skinny waifs at us and call them "sex bombs". I’m sorry, but sex is the last thing on my mind when I look at Callista Flockhart for instance. Teenage girls are being given these waifs as idols and role models. Most teenage girls are not lucky like your wife is. Most teenage girls have to starve themselves in the hopes of losing enough pounds to wear swimsuits or whatever, as though natural, healthy fat around the stomach area, etc. is something to be ashamed of. While some of these teenage girls are overweight, many aren’t, and I find myself continually telling friends of mine that they do not need to lose any more weight. Maybe I’m crazy, but I don’t see it that way. It’s not like I like obese women. For me it’s not a question of fat or slim. It’s a question of, "healthy", "not healthy". Oh PLEASE!!! She’s on Anti-Depressants, not tranquilisers! Anti-Depressants are NON addictive! You should not be putting people suffering from depression from seeking these tablets.
